A Tibetan Gazelle
First Leg: Xainza
The periods between March and May or between October and December are the best times for going to northern Tibet, when there is no rainy season, cars will not get stuck and it is not too cold.
At the end of last October, five of us started off from Lhasa to begin the "Drive to Northern Tibet" with two vehicles.
Jin Yong, Dorpuqin and I took a Cherokee 2500 bought months earlier that had not run on bad roads and so faced hard trial. The other vehicle was an old Beijing Jeep taken by Zhang Jie and Gongzha, which behaved just like a cradle when running.
Our destination was Nyima where we would take photographs of wild animals. However, we would go to Xainza County at first as it was the hometown of Gongzha. There were three possible routes: the first one was to go to Nyima by Nagqu and Banggo, the best and safest way and the one most used. It would take us two days to complete the journey without any stop on way. The second choice was to go to Nyima from Damxiong by crossing Nam Co Lake. By this way, we would drive among snow-covered mountains and through river valleys. The road condition was very bad but it was the shortest route. It would take us only one day if there was no problem/ The third option was to go to Nyima by entering Nagqu Xainza County from Namling of Xigaze. It was the longest route and would take us at least three days. The road condition was just so-so, but the scenery was the most beautiful with numerous lakes on the way.
Because of the scenic attractions this was the route we chose, although the Purku Hot Spring proved such an attraction that we might have forgotten to go on.
Purku Hot Spring Good for Stomach Diseases
Zhaxi Zholma met in the river valley
Purku Hot Spring is located at Nyemo beside the China-Nepal Highway and between Karu Township and Sanglong Village. Its fame has spread by word of mouth among common people. In Lhasa, we often heard how anyone with stomach problems would go to drink the spring water at Purku. ......
